  • Member Benefits

ACOEM membership is a partnership of professionals that reaches around the world with opportunities for education, recognition and for leadership. Together with almost 4,500 colleagues, your membership enhances the stature and recognition of the specialty; strengthens the voice of OEM in health policy debates; and promotes new levels of competency in the prevention and treatment of illness, injury, and disability in the work environment and community.

ACOEM’s Career Center provides information to help members advance their careers, search for jobs, or post an ad through ACOEM’s on-line recruitment resource. The Center is a member of HEALTHeCAREERS, a network of prestigious healthcare associations. Please check out an introduction to careers in OEM for an overview. Our online Doctor Finder Service provides professional information about each member who elects to participate in this public listing service. This is an excellent source of contacts for referrals and consulting assignments. OEM Practice Settings and Career Opportunties teleconferences, downloadable from the website, permit members to hear first-hand stories by OEM practitioners on how their careers began and are developing.

ACOEM promotes excellence in continuing medical education through its annual spring conference, the American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC), the largest meeting of OEM professionals in the world. Numerous courses, webinars, and conferences throughout the year provide a wide range of in-depth professional development opportunities specially designed by and for OEM physicians and related professionals. Earn CME via ACOEM’s Self-Assessments (Medical Review Officer, Commercial Driver Medical Examiner, and Health and Productivity Toolkit) and by monthly offerings through our scientific peer-reviewed journal, the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM). ACOEM provides an important resource for Board Certified Occupational Medicine physicians to assist in their maintenance of certification. ACOEM also advances the profession by publishing two newsletters, MRO Update and CDME Review, which provide the option of earning CME online. Members also have the ability to print transcripts of their participation in ACOEM’s continuing medical education.

Members steer the direction of the College through service as a delegate to ACOEM’s House of Delegates, on committees and councils, and by achieving Fellow status – the highest classification of membership within the College and the first step in eligibility to serve on the Board of Directors. Our online Leadership Database highlights the volunteer force that serves on ACOEM’s councils and committees. ACOEM also proudly supports continued efforts to stimulate research and education through the OEHF – Occupational & Environmental Health Foundation

ACOEM members enjoy access to a diverse portfolio of high-quality, competitively priced insurance, investment and other financial planning resources offered through the American Medical Association's AMA Insurance Agency and AMA Physicians Financial Partners network. These products have been selected to fit the specialized needs of the physician community, including physicians, residents, medical students and their families. The AMA Insurance Agency leverages the buying power of 1 million U.S. physicians to bring ACOEM members the most competitive rates from top-rated insurance companies. ACOEM members access these resources through a dedicated web page from their members’ only MY MEMBER BENEFITS site in MyACOEM as well as a dedicated toll-free number which allows members to speak with a live agent.

ACOEM is a dynamic forum for the exchange of new ideas, bringing together members to share their experiences, expertise, and friendship. Special Interest Sections – from Academic Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health to Resident and Recent Graduates, Transportation, and Work Fitness & Disability – provide networking opportunities via newsletters, list serves, and in-person meetings relevant to particular areas of interest. ACOEM gives you the added bonus of participation in one of its affiliated Component Societies. At this regional level you can find numerous opportunities for leadership, education, discussion of local issues, networking, professional development, referrals, and additional CME offerings.

ACOEM supports a pro-active governmental affairs program by tracking issues affecting the practice of OEM, advocating sound public policy in Washington, DC, and by keeping its members abreast of the latest legislative and regulatory developments. ACOEM’s Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines continue to be the gold standard in effective treatment of occupational injuries and illnesses providing essential evidence-based guidance that addresses the injured worker’s functional impairment and safe return to work. The Health and Productivity Toolkit provides the background needed to jumpstart the development of integrated health and wellness programs in the workplace. ACOEM's new subscription based electronic Guidance for the Medical Evaluation of Law Enforcement Officers provides physicians and other practitioners with the latest information to assist them in making medical qualification recommendation that promote the health and safety of law enforcement officers while ensuring their ability to protect civilian life and property.

As a member of ACOEM you have access to a comprehensive professional liability insurance program offered by NIA Insurance Services and underwritten by Lloyds of London.  This program is specifically designed for OEM physicians and available only to members of ACOEM. Many consultant services and administrative duties provided by OEM practitioners have not been covered by malpractice coverage. This Professional Liability Insurance Program responds to this need and offers coverage for both direct and non-direct patient contact—including protection from exposures from suits alleging negligence for errors and omissions in services provided to clients and from recommendations and decisions that may result in bodily injury to a third party (such as a patient). Previously, consultants seeking liability coverage had to decide between a medical malpractice policy that provided coverage only for direct patient relationships, or a miscellaneous professional liability insurance policy that generally excluded all bodily injury claims.  For more information link to Professional Liability Insurance.
